Today is cold and miserable day, perfect for sitting under a blanket with a cup of tea and a good book and it's also National Read a Book Day, so I thought I would tell you about a couple of my favourite books. The first oracle deck I got, illustrated by the talented Will Worthington. I love his artwork and connect with all the decks he's done on so many levels. They are rich in symbology and although I have the books, I don't tend to refer to them much at all. I was researching the myths and legends associated with trees and this deck and book draws on those along with the ogham alphabet. I'm a Pagan and I have found this book very good. There are lots of recipes for cooking scrummy food for the sabbats as well as cleaning and healing recipes to try. The book that started me on my spiritual path is this one. It is well written and full of ghost stories as well as the legends and traditions of Cheshire. I remember reading this as a child and scaring myself silly over some of the ghost stories but also very intriqued. This was actually my mum's and I borrowed it, secretly, a few times. I have now inherited all of mum's ghosts and legends books and hope to investigate a few to see what I pick up at the locations. Unfortunately, you can't buy this book new anymore and there was only one listing for it on Amazon. You may find it on Abe Books though.

I have encountered a few ghosts in Macclesfield, well, their replays of the significant moments in their lives. This story is about the well known apparition of Mary Fitton, who was a Lady in Waiting to Elizabeth I and who's family came from Gawsworth Hall. I have been into Gawsworth Hall and didn't encounter anything untoward there. Mary Fitton has apparently accompanied people walking down the road to the Harrington Arms a few times and has disappeared when they reached their destination. My encounter with the Fittons is a bit different and at the time, scared me silly. My mother and I were driving about one autumn evening and we went down the road towards Gawsworth Hall. On turning left into this road, I was overcome with a feeling of dread and started screaming at my mum to turn the car around and go back. There was nowhere safe to turn around and she carried on driving down the road. On getting closer to the New Hall, on the left, I 'saw' a horse drawn carriage come out of the first driveway and turn right. It was going to go right past us. It was being driven by a team of four horses, had two men driving them. I then was seeing inside the carriage. There was an older woman who was quite stern and came across as being angry at the other younger woman who was crying into a handkerchief. The stern woman was wearing a bottle green gown and the younger sobbing woman was wearing a red silk gown although there was none of the fancy ruffs and heavy beadwork on the gowns. Maybe they were wearing less fancy travelling gowns. The stern woman told the younger woman, "You've brought this on yourself" in a very annoyed manner. I got the impression she was angry at her because the younger woman was sobbing because she had been caught having an affair with someone her mother and father greatly disapproved of and was being sent away until the matter was resolved. I will never know because the carriage and its occupants disappeared as fast as they appeared. I believe the young woman was Mary Fitton. The dress fashion and the fact the Mary was sent home from Elizabeth I's court in disgrace after becoming pregnant by the Earl of Pembroke. Maybe the stables were kept there, across the road from the Tudor hall. |
